SEED GERMINATION TIPS

Melastomes with dry capsules

Melastoms are acidophilic, and this implies that their seeds should be planted on an acidic substrate, like peat or lateritic soil.  Also a type of soil rich in clay would be OK.  Avoid normal garden substrate, and don´t add limestone to the substrate.

Melastome seeds produced in dry capsules are usually very small and elongated. These type of seeds should be evenly spread on top of the substrate (do not bury them), within a humid chamber. After watering, cover the chamber with transparent plastic, letting plenty of space between the plastic roof and the seeds.  You can make a humid chamber with a plastic pot, filled 80% with the correct substrate, and with a wooden or plastic stick in the middle (in order to avoid the plastic 'tent' making contact with the seeds).

Water the container thoroughly upon seed sowing and place it under dim light (avoid direct sun). You won't need to water it again during one or two months.
