Cultivation of melastoms

With several friends who are very much engaged in the conservation or restoration of the Andean forests, we have been cultivating, at some Nature Reservations (including "El Refugio"), several interesting plants with ornamental potential, belonging to the family Melastomataceae.

The species in cultivation are Meriania hernandoi, Meriania peltata, Meriania quintuplinervis, Axinaea lehmannii, Centronia brachycera, Blakea florifera, Blakea granatensis, Blakea schultzei, Miconia poecilantha and Miconia "pepa-de-oso". We have grown them at different locationes, under different conditions of climate and soil. Because these species are not usually cultivated in Colombia, and bearing in mind the implications of this information for ex-situ conservation and forest restoration, it seems relevant to publish here the results of these trials (see PDF below).

CULTIVO DE MELASTOMATÁCEAS

CON VARIOS AMIGOS COMPROMETIDOS EN LA CONSERVACIÓN O RESTAURACIÓN DE LOS BOSQUES ANDINOS, NOS HEMOS PROPUESTO CULTIVAR, EN NUESTRAS RESERVAS NATURALES (INCLUYENDO EN "EL REFUGIO") VARIAS PLANTAS CON POTENCIAL ORNAMENTAL PERTENECIENTES A LA FAMILIA MELASTOMATACEAE.

SE TRATA DE LAS ESPECIES Meriania hernandoi, Meriania peltata, Meriania quintuplinervis, Axinaea lehmannii, Centronia brachycera, Blakea florifera, Blakea granatensis, Blakea schultzeiMiconia poecilantha Y Miconia "pepa-de-oso", LAS CUALES HEMOS CULTIVADO BAJO DIFERENTES CONDICIONES DE CLIMA Y SUELO.

DADO QUE ESTAS ESPECIES NO SON GENERALMENTE CULTIVADAS EN COLOMBIA, Y TENIENDO EN CUENTA LAS IMPLICACIONES QUE ESTA INFORMACION TIENE PARA LA CONSERVACIÓN ex-situ Y PARA LA RESTAURACIÓN DE BOSQUES, ES PERTINENTE PUBLICAR AQUÍ LOS RESULTADOS DE ESTOS ENSAYOS (ver PDF a continuación).
